Peter Simon, a local guy who we adore and is close to all of us graduated from Makerere Univ. in January- the number one school in Uganda. It is a feat in Uganda, and a nearly impossible feat as a Karamojong. There were 4 in his class I believe. Coming from Karamoja carries a tremendous stigma, as the people are regarded as backwards from most every other citizen. I compare it to the Aborigines in Australia, and as a US soldier commented, "like Native American reservations- but without the casinos". Pretty apt. So- I decided this called for a celebration SURPRISE party. Everyone gathered for games and food- and lots of beers. Apparently because of my concrete floor everyone felt just fine spilling their beers :) But oh well- it was fun. The balloons kept popping and scaring the bejesus out of everyone- which added an additional element of fun. Good thing I have solar power, because this was one of the first days of our 2 weeks without city power. Enjoy the photos of my furniture/decorations. I totally forgot to take pics of my place with the new stuff- my bad!

| Italians take over my kitchen to finish risotto on my stove top- yay solar!! Tomasso enjoys the benefits of an "open kitchen" as he puffs away. Later when a balloon popped and everyone shrieked, Tommie waits for awhile and then calls out, "hey guys, was that the gas tank?" jesus h. . . keep the cigarette away from my gas tank!!! |
