***Update as of this morning, leave it to me to find out 48 hrs after the story, that actually this happened last year, and was only being told as if it happened yesterday. Uggghhhhh! So frusterating. But apparently the "head choppers" are coming back according to rumors. But, I will stop listening :-) Only gets me in trouble!!
Yesterday, as I returned from field and was heading out to deal with the kid mess/cops (see Lost Girl post) my driver shared with me what the office staff were talking about under the tree. One of the ladies who runs the office cleaning/cooking had been returning from Kotido after taking her daughter for malaria treatment. She was on the public bus back to Moroto, when they started to smell something rank. People came to realize it was this man on the bus and his bag. They started asking what it was that was making this smell, and when he refused to answer, they grew suspicious. It was HUMAN HEADS. The Moroto police were called to the scene, and people are now told to be careful at night. When I spoke with my team about this, they explained that Diviners (a type of witch craft if you will) believe that the head of a human will stop a storied house from collapsing. You have to kill someone (preferably light brown and with a gap in their front teeth) -oh my god as I type that I realize our guard fits that effin description, god damn it, I am going to have to tell him, anyways, one of these heads brings luck. No one is ever safe in this country, I swear. Can you imagine that poor girl walking alone on the road in this environment?!
