Canal Crews

On Thanksgiving, it is important to remember that nearly one year ago the earthquake hit Haiti, an already vulnerable country--which was importing 100% of its drinkable water in its capital city pre-earthquake. Unfortunately, the funding has been stalled (much to the fault of the US) and the humanitarian response has been challenging to say the least. 7 UN peacekeepers were killed last week in riots in which the Peacekeepers were blamed for spreading cholera. Reports do say that the barracks for the UN mission forces were not up to standards, however, cholera is likely to spread when there is 1 toilet per 270 people and individuals are joining "canal crews" to clean up the waterways. This shocking image captures the grotesque nature of the situation--what does it say when the human rationale is "I will die anyway" and then submerges their body in this muck for hours . . . while envious locals wait , anticipating the person to fall sick so they can take their "job".

Haitians Plunge Into Muck to Stem Cholera
