165 days to go!
When it happened
Thursday, January 19, 2012How we got engaged
Nicki is about to start her new job and I asked her if she wanted to visit my cousin in San Fran before she had to worry about taking time off. So we both planned on going down to San Francisco and hitting up wineries, beaches, and doing various "cultured" la-ti-da activities. We boarded our plane and started to listen to music (nicki forgot her Ipod). I was choosing music and picked a couple random songs and then flipped to track I made on Garageband. Basically, I imported Bruno Coulais' "Babies Theme" (from the documentary) and over the top of that laid a track of me saying sweet things and prepping Nicki for the proposal. At about 34 seconds in my voice comes in and I only get about two sentences out before the flight attendant interrupts explaining all of their drink options, letting us know exactly how high we will be cruising, and reminding us to stay seated as the seatbelt sign was still on. I frantically pause the track not wanted her to miss any of the track and I notice both of us are getting a little misty and our hands are shaky. Announcements over, track back on, more tears (no sure at this point if from joy or from "I don't know how to tell you this Nick but...."). The track ends I propose with a whisper into her ear and pull out the ring from my pocket. The answer was yes, which was good because we still had another 2 hours on the plane and that could have got weird. During the flight I showed Nicki the letter I wrote her parents, I gave her the card they wrote her, and let her in on the secret of the trip which was that San Fran was just a lay-over on our way to Kona Hawaii.

And for the next 5 days we just enjoyed the beaches, sea turtles, sushi, drinks with umbrellas, unusual fruit, snorkeling, etc.
And just in case you just can't get enough of their cuteness, here is their 'About Us'
About Nicki
Nicki, quite simply is the single greatest person in the world. I start everyday laughing as she dances brushing her teeth, sings songs to/about her dinner, or shakes out a case of the weirds with a goofy dance move in the corner. She hails from Columbus, MT birthed by two wonderful parents, David and Laura Kane. She also has three awesome brothers, Sean, Joel, and Ethan. At Gonzaga University she got her bachelors of science in exercise science and did many volunteer activities such as leading Gonzaga Specialized Recreation (an on campus group that serves adults with developmental disabilities by providing opportunities for drama and sports). I joined GUSR just to get to know her. She stayed in Spokane to get a Masters in Occupational Therapy which she is totally boss at. I feel spoiled rotten by her and if this is what four years is like I can not imagine how much fun we will have for the rest of our lives.

Nicki amongst her Montana Mountains. Come to our wedding and you'll see them yourself! About Nick
Nick is hands down the funniest person I have ever met. Not only is he witty and a good joke teller, but he is not afraid to be himself. This allows him to be goofy and outgoing. I think that is what initially attracted me to him, because frankly, i'm a bit of a weirdo too. Not only is Nick fun to be around, but he is incredibly passionate. Nick puts his heart and soul into everything he does whether it's building his halloween costume to teaching his next algebra lesson to popping the question (see the proposal section and you'll understand). A few other things about Nick: 1. He has an awesome family with two brothers (Joe and Mitch) a sister (Emily) and wonderful parents (Kevin and Mary). 2. He is from Omaha and LOVES the Nebraska Huskers. 3. He's a heck of a Cranium partner. 4. He's an above average dancer.
How we met
We met while taking a rock climbing class together at Gonzaga University, and we carpooled to class. The next year, we were both guides for Gonzaga's Outdoor Orientation for entering freshman. We were on the hiking crew and were fast friends! We were both volunteers for GUSR and the day before we went on our first date, we won gold at the regional Special Olympics bowling tournament with our partner Darby! So we pretty much decided it was meant to be. Nicki even decided to continue dating Nick after he gave her a knitted hat from the Goodwill and sea-monkeys wrapped in a cheeze-it box for their first christmas. Currently, Nick is teaching and Nicki is beginning her first job as an occupational therapist. They like to bike, travel, read chapter-books, camp, fish, dance, cook, and watch documentaries.
